Language at the UIB
The Balearic Islands have two co-official languages: Catalan, the native language of the islands, and Spanish, the official language across the entire country.
The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has deep roots across the islands and respects this duality. In this sense, members of the university community are free to speak the co-official language of their choice. Moreover, the UIB's multilingual calling means English also has an important role, as the global language of communication, in addition to other languages. Nevertheless, in order to ensure and uphold Catalan use, as well as its status as the native tongue of the islands, the UIB places a priority on its use across all areas, whether academic or administrative. Language use at the UIB is governed by the UIB Language Use Regulations.
Before deciding on whether to enrol at the UIB, you are strongly advised to look into the UIB's language policy and, particularly, the languages of instruction for the programme you wish to take. Please be aware that in order to ensure basic transparency and language rights for all students, the language listed in course guides is final. This will help you better plan for your academic future and ensure all your needs and expectations align with the UIB's available programmes.
Like Spanish, French, Occitan, Portuguese, Romanian and Italian, Catalan is a Romance language with many structural and lexical similarities. This means that you will be able to understand and start using it before you know it, with just a little time and effort. Moreover, you will have access to a whole range of resources and support at the university to help you learn and adapt to a language that is integral to the institution's cultural and academic heritage.
