All About Language Exchanges

  • Language exchanges are a practical way for two people to practise each other's language at agreed meet-ups
  • They are mainly geared towards practising speaking skills and often supplement formal language learning
  • They are not only useful for improving language skills. They are also a great opportunity for intercultural exchanges and experiences.

Practical Advice for Participants

  • Set regular meet-ups that suit your availability
  • Decide on how long each meet-up will be and how long you'll speak in each language (we recommend a 50/50 split)
  • Try to find common interests to plan activities and practise your language skills: from everyday errands (e.g. shopping) to cultural or informative activities (e.g. visiting a museum or locating services)
  • If either of you want the activity to be included in your UIB cultural passport, remember to fill in the application form on the UIB website
  • If you want the exchange to be included in the cultural passport, you will need to arrange every meet-up either in the Sa Riera Building in Palma or in the Ramon Llull Building on campus between 9 am and 8 pm. In addition, you will need to ask the porters in the buildings to register your meet-up every time
  • Think about contacting other language partners to arrange a group activity.
